When I hear a friend is pregnant, I start a gift bag. I buy a nice baby gift bag that can be for a boy or a girl and start buying little things each week to put in it. Diapers (of course) bottles, baby nail clippers, bottle brushes, pacifiers, bibs, onesies, clothes, whatever! and since I am buying little things every week, it does not cost much. By the time the baby is here, there is a wonderful bag full of goodies for my friend. I think this is appropriate for any baby.
